This video, made on August 5, 1997, shows what it is like to perform a routine maintenance visit to the KKCR transmitter facility, 2800 feet above sea level, and usually in the clouds, as it was on this day. The station had just signed on a few days before, and more adjustments were needed.
Not quite a standard way to get to a tower, but this one provides little in the way of choice. But it's a great FM antenna site, that is for sure. Since this video was shot, I've been back up at least 50 times. It's always an adventure. The weather is unpredictable, and changes quickly. Our pilot is none other than Jack Harter (now retired). He was the best pilot on Kaua`i for sure back then. Now he is my neighbor.
The take-off and landing reveals big fields of sugar cane growing around the airport. Those are all gone now, as sugar cane is no longer grown here on Kaua`i.
the way the helicopter disappears as it leaves is pretty cool. im from kauai and have hiked this trail from the front and back sides a few times. its beautiful up there....aloha
