This article is about the first game in the Ghosts 'n Goblins franchise. For information on the game series, see Ghosts 'n Goblins (series).

Ghosts 'n Goblins (魔界村, Makaimura?, lit. "Demon World Village") is a 1985 platform game developed by Capcom for video arcades and has since been released on several other platforms. It is the first game in the Ghosts 'n Goblins franchise.

Gameplay

Ghosts 'n Goblins is a platform game where the player controls a knight, named Sir Arthur, who must defeat zombies, ogres, demons, armored giants, dragons, and other undead creatures in order to rescue Princess Prin Prin, who has been kidnapped by Satan, King of Demon World. Along the way the player can pick up new weapons, bonuses and extra suits of armor that can help in this task.

The game is often considered very difficult by arcade standards and is commonly regarded as one of the most difficult games ever released. The game is considered by Gametrailers.com to be the world's second most difficult game ever made.[1] The player can only be hit twice before losing a life(The first hit takes away his armor, and the player must continue on in his underwear until completing the level, or finding replacement armor). If the player loses a life, he is returned to the start of the level, or the halfway point if he has managed to get that far. Furthermore, each life can only last a certain length of time (generally around three minutes), the clock being reset at the start of a level. If the clock does run out, the player instantly loses that life.

After defeating the final boss for the first time the player is informed that the battle was "a trap devised by Satan". The player is then forced to replay the entire game on a higher difficulty level before finally reaching the genuine final battle.

------------------------------------------------------------

Ghouls 'n Ghosts (大魔界村, Dai Makaimura?, lit. "Great Demon World Village") is a platform game/run and gun developed by Capcom and released as an arcade game in 1988, and subsequently ported to a number of other platforms. It is the sequel to Ghosts 'n Goblins and the second game in the Ghosts 'n Goblins series.

Gameplay

The gameplay for Ghouls 'n Ghosts is similar to that of Ghosts 'n Goblins. The player controls the knight Arthur, who must advance through a series of eerie levels and defeat a number of undead and demonic creatures in his quest to restore the souls stolen by Lucifer (Loki in the English-language Genesis/Mega Drive and Sega Master System versions), including the soul of his lover, Princess Prin Prin. Along the way, Arthur can pick up a variety of weapons and armor to help him in his quest.

To defeat the game, Arthur must complete the game twice. The first time completion allows a special weapon to appear in the next round of play. To enter Lucifer's chamber the player must have this special weapon equipped and must have defeated the final Fly boss from level 5. After entering the final large door, the player goes directly to Lucifer's chamber.

While the core gameplay remains the same as its predecessor, the game now allows Arthur to fire directly upward and directly downward while in mid air.

By jumping in certain spots, players can cause a treasure chest to erupt from the ground. By firing his weapon at the chest, players may uncover new weapons, gold armor or an evil magician that changes Arthur into an elderly man or a helpless duck. The gold armor allows players to charge up the weapon to release a powerful magical attack. Each weapon has its own special attack.

  • Cool video!

Hey, you should also check out, if you haven't already, the ports on the NEC SuperGrafX and especially the Sharp x68000 port of this which is nearly arcade perfect! I couldn't believe how great it was. It's hands down the best version of the game aside from playing the arcade game or emulating it.

  • @videogameobsession ok ! I found out Why I couldn't locate it. it was under the Japanese name Daimakaimura I'll do a separate video for it. Thanks for the tip !! it is an Awesome title ! :D

  • @GamingHistorySource Ahh yeah, I guess I should have mentioned that. :P

Ghosts 'N Goblins was the very first 3rd party NES game I bought on release day! Man, that game drove me crazy, but I kept at it and finally beat it, well the first round anyway.

Ghouls 'N Ghosts was a much better game imo. It was more balanced and looked/sounded fantastic on the Genesis. It was a blast to play & I didn't mind playing through a 2nd time either!

Super G&G... The slowdown and cheap enemy hits bugged me.

  • @videogameobsession AHH !! the NES release in 1985 .. MAN !! I remember that. I was so stoked ! A guy I knew had a friend in New York that hooked him up with a console & I was Dumbfounded ! I wanted one so bad it made me sick ! But if I'm not mistaken He paid 200 bones for it. OUCH ! He too had the ghosts 'n Goblins game. Needless to say. He was really popular around the neighborhood. I think I got to play it once the whole time. lol But the fast fare had a ghosts 'n Goblins machine so ! was ok.

  • Thanks for this!

  • liked c64 musica

  • I love the music on the commodore versions.

  • Te falto el Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins

  • In the original Ghosts 'n' Goblins in the arcade, I got all the way through the utterly impossible level 5 after what seemed like 100 tries, and when I finally beat the two red guards at the end, instead of getting a key, the game told me that I couldn't go on because I didn't have the shield equipped as my weapon!

Never did the game say that I needed to equip it until after I beat the level, or ever explain why that even makes sense; then it sent me back to level 4! Go to hell Capcom!

  • There's also Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins for the PSP.

  • I've only played the NES and SNES versions.

The Ghosts n' Goblins NES version was MUCH harder than the SNES Super Ghouls n' Ghosts version. I did like the Mode 7 Graphics the Super version used on some of its levels, such as the Ghoul's Stomach (Level 4) when the screen rotates itself. And I hated that damn Red Devil in both versions. The Green and Gold Armor on the Super versions using the expanded power-ups helped me tremendously against those damn Red Devils on the Super version.

  • @MattTheSaiyan Try the SNES version. an EXTREMELY great port !

  • I have "Pac-Man" and/or "Ms Pac-Man" on about 7 different systems, but I haven't played either "Ghosts 'n Goblins" or "Ghouls 'n Ghosts" on ANY format. More proof that I'm extremely stupid, and that I must recify this situation as soon as possible . That NES version of "Ghosts 'n Goblins" looks fun, and that Game Boy Color version looks impressive considering the hardware...
