Has the government paid the auto dealers any significant portion of the money owed to them yet? Last I heard, they paid almost nothing and were turning down a lot of applications because they weren't filled out correctly or something.

bluedust80: It didn't get the economy back on track. It completely devastated those who specialize in the used car business. Are you aware that the "clunkers" were destroyed? Charities that accept used cars as donations were severely hurt. Taxpayers are now out the $3 billion that it cost to run the program.
After today, new car dealers will have an extremely hard time selling new cars. Consumers will just wait around for the next "government gimmick" before buying a new car.

Wait.....what? How did it get the economy back on track? How does any program that is only a few weeks old get the economy back on track?

it got the economy back on track so how it wasnt a succes ?

But how long are they going to be back in work? Like I said, it's a short term boost in sales, but what's going to keep people buying the cars?
As a conservative, I want the government to quit spending so much money and lower taxes. That's how I want the average Joe to "get" money from the government. Otherwise, where's the money from the government going to come from?
And by the way, why attack us with the cue cards thing? Stick to the topic at hand.

Cash for Clunkers is NOT a success. It's like the "Broken Window Fallacy". Nobody is looking at the long-term consequences.
The so-called "clunkers" were destroyed, and now the used car market is severely suffering. Poor working people and students NEED those cars, but now they're destroyed, and the prices of the remaining used cars are going up.
A program that was supposed to last for four months that runs out of money in a week is a success? Really?
They put a very short term boost in sales in the auto market, and they expect people to keep buying cars when they stop getting money for it?
And another problem is that most of the dealers are still waiting on the government to pay them the money owed through the program.
I agree with TranCendenZ....this program was not a success.

Putting people back to work that haven't worked in months is not a success? Really. They gave billions to wall street but they couldn't give $4500 to the average Joe to buy a car. Thats the plan the Republicans wanted in the first place and now their criticizing it . I think you guys need to check your cue cards to see what you're suppose to be for or against. I have to disagree with both of you and say it was too successful.
