After the death of Senator Edward Kennedy, Beacon Hill Democrats sought to change the existing law to allow the governor to appoint an interim US Senator. In 2004, the Republicans in the legislature had submitted the same amendment, which was squashed by the Democrats, as the governor at that time was Mitt Romney, a Republican. The Democrats used their supermajority to pass the amendment anyway.
