Robert Dickson joined Hawthorn in 1980 as a member of the Under 17's Peter Crimmins squad along with the likes of Paul Abbott and James Morrissey. He was monitored at Morwell and was invited back to Hawthorn for 1986 as a mature aged recruit at the age of 22 after numerous prominent displays.
Rob made his senior debut in a 1987 night match, kicked 63 goals to win the VFL Reserves leading goalkicker award and also won the Hawthorn Reserves Most Promising Player award in the same year.
His second senior game was a premiership in the 1988 Panasonic Cup Grand Final against Geelong. Rob played 17 games between 1988 and 1990 for 12 goals and was an emergency for the 1989 Grand Final.
In 1991 Rob transferred to the Brisbane Bears where he played another 2 AFL games and was a member of the Brisbane Reserves premiership side.
It was in 1991 that the general football world discovered Rob's love of documentary filming when "Good For Football" was released on video through the Hawthorn Football Club and was edited from his footage shot during end of season overseas football trips by Hawthorn in 1988-89.
Rob's popularity and love for Hawthorn saw him return to the club as the runner for a couple of seasons but it was his football documentaries that were starting to take off. In 2000 he produced "Passion To Play" which was critically acclaimed and followed this up in 2004 with "Shane Crawford Exposed". Rob became a national celebrity in 2001 when he was a contestant - and won - on Australian Survivor.
In 2008 Rob was commissioned by the AFL and Channel 7 to make a documentary to celebrate Australian Football's 150th birthday. "The Essence Of The Game" is a superb production that shows the efforts that various players and clubs go through at different levels to achieve success. A particular delight was the behind the scenes footage of his beloved Hawks on their way to taking out the flag.
Robert Dickson was tragically killed on April 11 2009 in a road accident while on holiday with his family in South Africa. His younger son Byron also died in the accident while his wife Dusty and other son Gabriel received injuries. Robert was 45.
What was that ground at the end there.
