Senior Honors Thesis
LED-Based Free-Space
Optical Networking & Illumination System

Thesis Presenter: Jimmy Chau

To provide high-speed networking through white illumination from LEDs, this project shall deliver two free-space optical (FSO) network adapters. These network adapters shall pass light from red, green, and blue LEDs through a diffuser to form a white-light link with a throughput greater than 1Mbps and a BER less than 8 _ 10-8. By independently modulating the intensity of the red, green, and blue LEDs, this system shall achieve approximately three times the throughput of a similar system using only one color or one white LED. Other features shall include the ability to operate in the presence of ambient fluorescent lighting, and the ability to operate with the transmitter and receiver somewhat misaligned.
