@AhaSeriously Because you wouldn't have black actors at that time due to the discrimination... So white people would dress up as black, exaggerating the black features and behavior, making fun of them! It was the same with Japanese and chinese people in movies, played by white actors. peace.

@AhaSeriously It's the same ritual for the masks of actors of greek plays or commedia. It's a symbol of transformation. Someone raised exactly the same question in my theatre history class today :)

The first recorded blackface performances can be traced to the early 1600s in Williams Shakespeare Othello out of necessity for it was difficult to find black performers in Europe

And it's really impressive when you take into account how old he was. His actual birth date is unknown, but he had to be over 70 when this film was made. Amazon Marketplace has a minstrel show artifact for sale that he autographed in 1884. That was 67 years before this film was made.
