I believe that Historian dark hair guy fed him the informations. Yes, I agree that Derek overdid his possession that even I knew nothing about these type of stuff, I can see through even the first time I watch him for just a few minutes. I tried watching it a few times but always change channel after a few minutes with Derek's call possession all the time.

I hate how Derek is always finding ritual sacrifice and devil worship everywhere he goes. Personally I think he is always trying to push the negative stereotypes associated with anything Pagan or pre-Christian pushed by the church. He's very disappointing, especially in this day and age. Those of us who are open-minded know better.
