Thanks for the lead. John F. Kennedy's misadventures on the PT109 do fit the bill. I hadn't heard about it until I read your comment.
I hope to, when I find the time, make a video connecting photos of men to the each line of lyrics in the song. The verse dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr. will show different photos for each line. Jesus Christ is obvious. Gandhi features and yeah, a couple of others..hehe (keeping it secret).
Thanks again.
Tom.

The best connection I can make to 'one man washed.. on an empty beach" is the Count of Monte Cristo after he escapes from prison and swims to the nearest beach.
Does anyone know of anyone else (real or fictional) which those lyrics could be referring to? Thanks in advance if you provide a serious response. Much appreciated.

It's really Bono, not now, your voice actually ...su imagen actual rompe su posicion de antaño, no se, espero que esto sea solo algo para la TV ...watch more TV.

Well... Anton was starting his career as a video director in 1984, right?

For those interested, This was filmed in a warehouse in Hanwell, West London. The tree was painted onto the warehouse wall and out of shot the band are surrounded by fridges It was my first place of work and between takes i was sending Bono up and down on a forklift used for lifting goods to the next floor! I was pig sick when the other video came out instead, but understood why when i saw this version!! If i knew then how big they would get i would have begged them for a job! Nice blokes!

@thejibberjabber1 Thanks for the info - nice story and I guess you're a small part of U2's history :)
It makes me smile thinking of little Bono going up and down on that forklift truck lol
Thanks.
