Welcome to the NHK is supposed to be a true inclination of life in which yes there are moments in life that we laugh and have fun but under it all its just an attempt to coverup something that we don't want getting out. (the reason Mizaki takes a year to even tell Satou anything about her)

Satou's fear of death overcame his fear of the outside world.

It's funny; Misaki wanted to help Satou stop being a hikikomori, but if he had just let her treat him like a baby forever, he might've never been forced to do anything for himself.
