Deep Purple - solo jazz piano. Another experiment - this time with 8 bars of the lead sheet displayed, with the scrolling notation , the clear piano view and the text comments on some of the techniques used. There is a much better version (along with a midi file, pdf transcription and leadsheet at

  • Nice playing.

I think you could change some of the notation - there's lots of enharmonic (sharps where there should be flats etc.) strangeness going on that might confuse the beginner...

Nice playing, reminded me of Peterson and Basie a bit, with a little bit of Bill Evans (my personal favourite) in there

  • Thanks for the comments. Yes, the enharmonic irregularities are there - the program I use decides to use either sharps or flats according to the chord that operates at that point. Chords that derive from a 'sharp' key (e.g Am7 / D7) it translates as ii and V in the key of G Major, no matter that it may resolve to Gm. I have to accept these irregularities, as the other features of the program make the job of transcription much easier than any other program I have used.

  • By the way, the software is either Band in a Box or Power Tracks pro audio. They have certain advantages - they will allow a floating split point between clefs, will read a tempo map that allows fractions of BPM, and are easy to edit.

  • I have learned a lot so far, thanks for posting.

  • Gotta say, your tutorials here have been tremendously helpful over these last two years or so. It's really hard to find advanced great playing to learn from in such a clear format. Bravi and thanks!

  • There is another way of playing it that makes it a fox trot or waltz. Just look up "Lighthouse point stinson band organ" and it will play deep puple.

  • nice playing, kinda like an easy stride feel from the left hand with bill evans harmonies from the right with hints of oscar peterson and erroll garner
