Crank up the speakers and subs! You can hear the big diesel engines spooling up as the engineer slowly applies more electrical power to the traction motors. There are 9 "run" levels or "notches" in the throttle, 0 (zero) is OFF no power to the wheels, Run 1 or Notch 1 sends very low power to the wheels to crawl ahead slowly but the big diesel engine in the back (called the Prime Mover) doesn't speed up yet. At Notch 2 you can hear the Prime Mover increase its RPM so the generator can turn faster to make more power to go to the wheels. You can hear the RPM go up every time the engineer moves the throttle through the power levels all the way to Notch 8 which is practically "gas pedal slammed to the floor".

We arrived at Smith's Falls around noon, picked up some fast food, then found this train occupying the platform tracks at the VIA station. We knew a VIA Rail passenger train was to be arriving within the hour or so, meaning that big freight HAD to move out of the way, but from our position we couldn't tell if the train was oriented to go east to Montreal or west to Toronto. So we took a gamble and followed the tracks south (east) and lucky for us we found the locomotives idling at Lorne Rd. It was just sitting there so I drove across to the other side, turned around and pulled over. I was about to unwrap my Angry Tendercrisp when the locomotive began moving, so I tossed the burger on the dash and grabbed the camera.

This is my first true rail video finally uploaded to Youtube.

Had to put this up right away because I thought hearing the engines speed up as the train left was so cool. ;) BTW if you could let me know what kind of engines these are it would be great. Thanks. I get confused with the nomenclature, SD70MAC etc? And also I was wondering what's the deal with the lead unit marked as St. Lawrence and Hudson (St. L&H) if that rail line still exists or what's going on. Thanks for watching!

  • No more St.L&H owned and everything is handed over to CP. All CP controlled. St.L&H used to own everything and lines of D&H or Delaware and Hudson railway. Whatever D&H had was that of St.L&H.

  • Looks like a trio of SD40-2's leading. StL&H was CP's subsidiary eastern operating unit starting in 1996, wholly owned I should say. It was headquartered in Montreal, QC. It started to fell through in 2001 back to CP Rail. It is slowing dissolving every since. CP was hoping it would take care of itself so that CP would focus more on western Canada. The St.L&H was to be in charge of mostly container trains or expressway.
