Hydrogen sulfide occurs naturally and is also produced by human activities. Just a few breaths of air containing high levels of hydrogen sulfide gas can cause death. Lower, longer-term exposure can cause eye irritation, headache, and fatigue. For more on hydrogen sulfide, go to the ATSDR website at http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/tfacts114.html#bookmark01 . This is clipped from the 1973 Bureau of Mines film, Breathe and Live: Ventilation in Metal and Nonmetal Mines (21 minutes).

Cool video.....At the mine I work at whenever they shut down a fan theres so much fanfare and barricades theres no way someone could wander in to the heading.....I just dont know why the miners wouldnt recognize the rotten egg smell and GTFO....Supposedly you can smell it at least once before it deadens your sense of smell.....

"DEATH BY FART" is somewhat accurate. A person's health used to be measured by the smell of a patient's intestinal gas. If too much of H2S was produced, it meant that there was an overabundance of putrefactive bacteria and sometimes disease. Stomach flu bug produces more H2S than the normal human intestinal activity. Other ingredients in a fart besides H2S: Methane, Hydrogen, Carbon dioxide, mercaptan, Butyric acid...
