Workers on the morning shift at the Chernobyl nuclear plant remembered colleagues who lost their lives 25 years ago today.
The workers now mainly perform administrative and maintenance tasks, monitoring the safety of the protective covering over a damaged reactor, which still houses a large amount of radioactive material.
Andriy Gusin, Shift Leader Who Worked at the Station 25 Years Ago, said, "We came by bus over there to this very same bus station. As soon as we crossed the Prypyat River Bridge, we saw the power plant and we could see the destruction to the outside clearly. When we started our shift, we didn't yet know what kind of destruction it was, but it was clear it was big."
Gennady Pinkul, Plant Engineer, said, "We are mourning them of course, 25 years ago those people protected us. They were the same age as us."
