The pentium 4 have a single core, but the last version of Pentium 4 had a virtual dual core because of the Hyper Treading Technology.

If you're going to try Linux on that Dell, try Ubuntu. You will not be disappointed. I've been running Ubuntu on my Dell Dimension 8400 since 2006 and currently using version 8.04. It works great. Only problem is finding printer drivers -- so stick with HP and Canon printers. Kodak printers are NOT supported on Linux.

First you install vista, then you install 7 from there :)
