  • Thanks--we have since learned from the vet to ensure that the cat is standing otherwise they cannot swallow...but I did not know that until later!

  • Thanks all for the tips--Angel used to eat the Greenies but for some reason one day stopped eating them. The vet showed me how to give the pill properly--apparently the cat cannot swallow very well when on her back, and it is better to have her standing so that she can swallow. Though now the city does not have any pill form left for her prescription, only liquid left. It is easier to give pills than liquids to Angel. Angel shakes her head with the liquid if done too much at once.

  • Bad method: turning her upside down only makes her angrier and more upset.

  • yeah, shes gonna scratch your eyes out when you sleep...

  • Also, there are these wonderful products called Greenies pill pockets which have a pouch so you can insert the pill, then close it up and give to kitty. Most cats love them and gobble right up, thinking they are getting a treat!

  • Next time, you might want to try wrapping her in a towel so you won't have to hold her arms. Then put the pill on the very back of her throat (blow it there through a straw if you don't want to place it there with your hand.) Then, as TehKitten01 suggested, stroke her throat or blow on her nose to get her to swallow. She's really not that bad. If I tried to do it like you did (leaving my cat's back feet free) I'd have to go to the E.R. to get stitches!

  • Stroke the throat or blow on the nose to encourage swallowing.

  • Such a cutie granny kitty:)

  • Have you tried butter/margarine? Lalo has the same temperament and when she's needed meds I coat the pill in a bit of margarine and then put it in as far back in her throat as possible (like, shove your finger right in there so that it triggers her swallowing reflex) and stroke her throat and it usually goes down. I also hold her feet down as opposed to on her back and prone because she stays a tiny bit calmer and it's harder for her to scratch because her feet are against the floor.
