Quite possibly and very sadly the last time this will be sung at the famous Boulevard before Hull City Coucil send in the bulldozers to destroy the little that is left of this once proud home of Hull FC Rugby League Club. I don't profess to being a pass holding, never miss a match fan - I have none the less attended regularly for most of my life. I do feel this gives me the right to expess my anger that Hull CC has allowed this to happen with no regard whatsoever to the wishes of many people both in the city and indeed countrywide and worldwide with respect to sons and daughtersof the city who no longer live within it's boundaries. This is part of this city's culture and heritage for God's sake! There will be fan's of Rovers and the Tigers who will sneer at such sentiment however they should remember that both clubs have played at that ground at various points in their history, therefore share this common bond - the only one that links all clubs!Hull City Council hang your heads in shame. Hull CC has currently part financed a number of plastic Toads throughout the the city as tribute to the poet Philip Larkin. Philip who? I hear you cry. Well for those of you who don't know he wrote some poem's that few people know of when he worked as a Librarian at Hull University. But what did he contribute to the culture of the City itself? If we are to believe what's known of him he despised and loathed the working classes in addition to the students he was paid to serve - fine credential's indeed! Culture is not just about a critically and intellectually acclaimed poem, sculpture, painting, but also about ordinary people, a feeling, a belonging, a being part of something often intangable. This country is fast losing it's traditional culture and heritage at rate never before experienced by any previous generations and we are standing idly by and letting it happen. Rant over !
This was taken as we made a last visit to this grand old Cathedral of high's low's, laughing (and quite often crying) that is all part of the great game of Rugby League. Our kid and me sneaked in (yes sneaked not snook as our American cousin's say and inreasingly used in this country - culture and heritage erosion again!) and had one last nostalgic and emotional look around the place. We did this regulary on match days as did most kids growing up on Hessle Road in the 60's and 70's despite the fact we had ticket's to get in - it was what was commonly known as having fun in those day's. As was custom (nae compulsory) in it's heyday we decided to have one last beer in the Threepenny Stands before saying a fond farewell. So please raise your glass ( or bottle or can) and toast this once great theatre of dreams and dissapointments. Feel free to join in and sing along as we all once did together within it's warm embrace and say goodbye to the one, the only, THE BOULVARD!!!!!! R.I.P
