An unsolved murder at Portland's infamous Paranoid Park brings detectives to a local high school, propelling a young skater into a moral odyssey where he must not only deal with the pain and disconnect of adolescence but the consequences of his own actions.

As director of "My Own Private Idaho", "Good Will Hunting", "To Die For" and "Elephant", Gus Van Sant has created some of the most memorable films about youth ever committed to film. At the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, he was awarded the 60th Anniversary Prize for "Paranoid Park" which is largely considered one of his finest films. Based on the novel by Blake Nelson & photographed by the incomparable Christopher Doyle ("In the Mood for Love"; "2046"), the film has captivated audiences worldwide, becoming a unanimous standout at the Cannes, New York and Toronto Film Festivals.

  • The whole point of this movie was to capture what it is like for teenagers growing up. When they put it together they wanted bad acting because they wanted it to feel raw, and real. The movie felt angsty because it's suppose to be angsty as this would be the common teenage reaction to killing someone.

As for the budget person: this was made as an independent film not the kind of budget major hollywood productions are used to working with. It's suppose to feel raw and unrehearsed.

  • @ParanoidAndroid9911 Whole movie is an allegory to being gay. Van Sant was openly gay when youth and grabbed experiences of his own for the movie, its about being *paranoid* to having the terrible secret revealed, not the secret killing a person but of being gay. Van Sant's stories of how he was interrogated in school remind me of how "Lulu" interrogated the protagonist. there was suppose to be a scene where Alex and Jared where sleeping together but their parents wouldn't agree to do the scene

  • @Jordan3445 There's obviously a purpose for those extra long scenes. When Alex is walking down the hallway, he looks back several times, thinking the detective would rush out of the classroom, in disbelief of what he'd just told him about the night.

This isn't the usual film, and i'm working on it in my media/film class.

Seems like the perfect stuff for it.

    (: (:

  • Gus Van Sant didnt do a very good job at portraying the "teenage skater". These kids are like 16, yet they act more like middle schoolers... I wish he would have made the characters a little less innocent, more bad ass

  • love the music

  • @ImminentDeparture I have to agree with you. Mostly, though, I wanted to point out that your comment reminded me of how people seem to compare Larry Clark and Gus Van Sant a lot.

  • VAN SANT - you continuity is screwed up when hes at the beach writing in his notebook. He leaves with the notebook in his right hand. Then when you show him leaving down the long path NO NOTEBOOK. Then he walks into his house and SURPRISE has the notebook again. Your Slippin on that one Van Sant.

  • Exelente pelicula (:

  • this movie would have been real good if they didnt have stupid parts like alex walking down the hallway in super slow motion and it takes up what seems like 20 minutes of the movie. and another part where they are driving but all you see is alex's friend in super slow motion for like 20 minutes again. there were probably some other parts in the movie that where like that but those parts just seemed uncalled for and annoying

  • @ParanoidAndroid9911: I get that this is supposed to be a "raw" movie, but come on, the story line is lazy and it's the seemingly small things like at the beginning of this trailer where he's writing in his dairy. You can clearly see he isn't writing. Of course in movies they don't really "write", but in other movies they actually make an attempt to appear to be doing so.

You guys want a "raw" teenage movie? Watch Larry Clark's "Bully". Now there's one for you.

  • @GiantDagger2 It is (in the surface) about the movie, But deeper as an allegory (only slightly deeper) is about Van Sants experience as a youth when he "came out of the closet" There are many scenarios in the movie that are subtle allegories to how it is like to be gay in youth. If you look at Van Sants filmography, he does this ofthen with almost all his movies and it is always about being gay. I don't have anything against it, Gays are cool is just interesting like in Inception.

  • @MsBickle76 Wait, so you are saying that Alex (The main character) was gay? So the whole plot is not really about the killing, but about being gay?
