  • Makes sense to me. If I had more space, I would certainly follow suit but I have so little space (5'X10' studio/shop carved out of my tiny studio apartment; city living!) that I need to keep things away and out of the mess when I'm not using them (and even when I am.) I am slowly improving the storage in my little space though and adding things to the walls for more storage. Good philosophy for those who have stable work spaces and aren't traveling with their tools (such as Chris.)

My mission in life is to balnce the pervasive "pro-toolbox" chorus with the under-represented cry that toolchests & most tool cabinets are worse than worthless. A tool storage system should make the tools instantly available to your grasp. Putting a tool away should be virtually as easy as setting it on the bench. If those specs aren't met, the tools just pile up on the bench. Well designed tool storage racks are so rare that hardly anyone even knows what to look for.

  • @deezynar It makes sense for Chris though. He's traveling with his tools all the time so I'm sure he goes through this a lot.

  • Thanks for showing this, Chris. I have been told by some tool chest afficianados that they actually "work" out of their chests. You show what really happens, they pull out what they need and leave them out. That's why I'm anti-toolchest. I own my shop & have a lock on the door so I don't need to lock them in a box.

  • Now THATS how you tool gloat. Love your writing. Pretty new to all of this but voraciously learning wherever I can and always enjoy your pieces. I subscribed to popular woodworking pretty much the second you stepped down though. Best of luck pursuing your dream of becoming a hand plane or whatever.

  • You do this often do you? Setting your tools out just to feel them and see them on the bench, only to put them away without so much as a single tenon cut? You said you did in your book. And now, here it is, caught on video. There's no denying it now. All the world now knows what you do in your basement. Shame on you! From tool hoarder to tool fondler. :-)
