FWIW, this came out about just before the no less enjoyable Brit-com "Are You Being Served?"

bad? This was terrific! Charming and sweet, and Peter Kastner is particularly fine. But it could not sustain the cross dressing as a premise, it seems. It would have been better if the show used this as an episode of the fellows wacky adventures instead of locking him into the Timmie character, hilarious and well done as it was. Sponsors and TV execs, even public, couldn't sustain it, accept it for long. As an episode, ok, as a premise, no go. 1968!

I was waiting for the closing credits to confirm it, but yes, magazine publisher David Courtney was played by Nicholas Parsons! It was probably one of his few TV appearances on this side of The Pond!

This show is FUNNY! And that song ... I still remembered it after all these years -- not all the words, but certainly the tune. Thursday night, it was "The Ugliest Girl," then "The Flying Nun," "Bewtiched," and then -- the jewel in the crown -- "That Girl." God bless my parents for letting me watch all the television I wanted!

Is the guy dancing with Timmie in the end credits Marty Feldman? Sure looks like him.

@Trefoile I kept reading how bad this show was and I agree with you- it hardly seems the horror show all the critics would lead you to believe. Frankly, Bosom Buddies (a show I liked as well) took just as big a stretch of the imagination to buy into, but that show was able to have a decent run- and the premise wasn't all that different from this show.

@4thtroika - I agree. It has a definite charm and a lot of energy. It would be great to watch some other episodes to see if they kept up the momentum. I would think it would have been difficult after awhile coming up with scripts involving the charade, but judging from this pilot it is not anywhere nearly as bad as legend would have it. At least it was more original than a lot of shows from that era.
The group in the background (but not providing the music) in the boat scene (from 4 minutes in) was Tuesday's Children, I was the keyboard player in that group and I remember our agent getting this job as extras for 2 days filming at Pinewood Studios. We had to be on set before 8 in the morning and filming went on until the evening. We had a great time, pity none of our faces were visible but you can see the 1960's clothes and the Gibson guitar and Fender bass quite clearly.

Its a shame the print is so faded...mostly sepia tones left. I remember it being a lot more colorful.....like the time it depicted.
If memory serves, Yardley of London was a sponsor....buying their stuff was the closest most of us figured we would get to Carnaby St. :D
