In researching different elements of Silent Hill, screenwriter Roger Avary came across a town called Centralia which is in Pennsylvania. Centralia planted the seed for what developed into the town of Silent Hill.

This is a short documentary I made in 2003 about the town which inspired Silent Hill which has been linked to from various places on the net.

its pretty sad how an abandoned village is the only place safe for wild life to live anymore.

it's horrible. i can't walk around my house barefoot because my floor is scorching hot. i'm constantly breathing in lethal toxic fumes, so that sucks. i vomit at least 8 times a day because of it. the worst part is that every night i hear the screams of children coming from underground. i'm not kidding, this place is hell. i can't believe i moved here just to save $25 a month on rent. i'm so startled.

Yes, it is highly possible for coal underground to continue to burn. The center of the earth is molten lava, you know? Lmao

Easily. They drive cars:) I go to/through Centralia multiple times a year when visiting family. The town isn't condemned or blocked off from the world. You can get to it and drive right through it. It's where I used to play, go to church, ride bikes, and had a great childhood since I lived above the town. Was the nicest little place with the greatest people. Just memories now.

The coal underneath the ground has been burning since the 1960's. The vein of coal runs deep and for miles (kilometers in your case) in many directions. The fire has enough fuel to burn for decades. How long will it burn? No one knows.
