The Center for Immunotherapy at Roswell Park Cancer Institute has launched a phase I clinical research study of a dendritic cell vaccine designed to both eradicate cancer cells and prevent disease relapse. You can read more about this new vaccine and clinical trial here: http://goo.gl/5aM4E

ABOUT CLINICAL RESEARCH STUDIES:
Without the clinical study process, we would not have any of the standard cancer treatments that are used today to save and prolong lives. All patients are offered the best possible treatment; for some, this is a new treatment in a clinical study. Listen to the story of this survivor: http://goo.gl/FP03y

  • Anyone interested in better understanding what this vaccine is, how it works, and how it's being studied can view a short video explanation on our "RPCI Cancer Talk blog" channel as well.

  • This is like the movie "I AM LEGEND" its scary!!!

  • @MrOceanPenguin You got it! :)

Fiddling with our immune system is very dangerous. The best defense is to have a healthy live style and try your best to avoid anything that could cause damages to your immune system. We have a lot to learn. ;)

  • @joythemonkey I thought that giving them the vaccines would hinder the spread of the cancer? Oh well ... :-)

  • @MrOceanPenguin Thanks. I don't think vaccines are used on the ones already have the diseases. Flu patients can not take the flu vaccines, right?

They need healthy people to test their new product to see if it's safe. What if it's unsafe? Then that would be too late. The test objects' immune system has already been compromised. :S

  • @joythemonkey Probably people who are already on the verge of death and desperate to try whatever options they've got ... I.e. people with lethal cancer.

  • I hope this works.

  • ... the phase 1 trial will only be looking to see if the vaccine is safe, not even to prove it works, ..." -- Eyewitness News

So they need guinea pigs for testing its SAFETY in this phase. Any heroic volunteers? LOL

  • What a wonderful country the United States is.

Scientists from all over the world come here and work with native scientists to develop technologies that benefit people around the world.

I am in awe. The U.S. is indeed the world in microcosm.
