Glenn Gould, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Songs without words (Selection) Opp 19, 85, 30, recordings july 1970
On April 1971, Gould wrote to a fan "I have always felt that among the earlier generation of romantic composers, the most sadly underestimated is Felix Mendelssohn. In my opinion, the precision of craft wich Mendelssohn exhibits, especially in his orchestral music, is equalled by few composers in the 19th century and that craft, moreover, is put at the service of an extraordinarily touching, neo-devotional attitude wich I find particularly alluring".

  • Glenn Gould breathed musical and esthetic life into everything that he loved enough to perform or record. This is Mendelssohn for the true devotee, thanx for the real treat.

  • Gould was brilliant and his luminosity on piano was extingiushed too early in life sadly

    great recordings these

  • Wow!

  • I'm probably Glenn's biggest fan, and this is very nice but Perahia's rendition of the cycle is really beautiful. Better than Glenn's.

  • Thank you for posting this. His performance of the music from Romantic era is overlooked due to his Bach performances. But, it blows away performances by other pianists.

  • I'm such a dickhead

  • This time you got it Glenn Johann Seb Bach Leipzig Cantor
