Moonflower is a stellar recording by the Santana Band, made up of both new releases and live versions of classic Santana songs. The live tracks are all from Amigos, Festival, and Santana's brilliant first three albums; there is nothing from the jazzy middle period. Two quintessential, precious Santana numbers are introduced on Moonflower: the title cut, written by keyboard player Tom Coster and hard to distinguish from "Europa" (also on this album, live) until the latter parts of each, and "She's Not There," a great cover of the 1960s English hit. Coster's piano shines on "Dawn/Go Within." But all the new songs are excellent: "Bahia"; "Zulu," with its great Afro-Cuban rhythms; "El Morocco," jazz fusion and a little funk; and two very lovely numbers, "I'll Be Waiting" and "Transcendance." Carlos' blistering, dazzling guitar magic and, as usual, the percussion section are excellent throughout. "Toussaint L'Overture," "Soul Sacrifice," and "Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen" are always gems on a live Santana album (especially live cuts of "Gypsy Queen," beyond breathtaking). There is something here for everyone, all very good. Moonflower is arguably the high-water mark of the Santana Band, capturing the eclectic character and musical dynamism of its early period, and as a double CD to boot.

  • Who does the vocal on this? Such beautiful music with a great twist of zip!!!

  • @Cindyleef - It's Greg Walker one of the original members of Santana. Truly a brilliant singer!

  • When is time to say goodbye .... Its the sadest moment for any relationships .

But if you listen to transcendance we can understand that , love is hello and goodbye .

    Until we meet again ....

  • @thelizardking10 ...and this 'love is hello and goodbye' was not only written in 1977, but was sung to one of the best melodies I've ever heard!

  • this song is truly beautiful... whenever im really depressed this just makes me feel so much better. This song to me is what love sounds like

  • I think you hit it right on the nail xarmendarizx! If love was tangible...this would be it.

  • We (my brother and I) used to listen to this song when we were in high school. I played this song for my brother (RIP Steven) as he passed away peacefully. I know we'll be together again. Miss you Bro very much.

  • this song doesnt fit in any conventional category, thats why its great!

  • This song says it all. Carlos said his music can make the hair on your arms stand up and make you feel like you felt when you had your first french kiss. Like going to the moon and back.

  • This song reminds me of all the good times I've had with my friends and family. It reminds me of my hometown back in Cali. When I first heard this song I was on the verge of tears. Thanks Santana for making such beautiful music and thank you God for letting such an amazing musician exist in this world! =)
