Part 1 of The Snow Queen, as produced by BBC Enterprises in 1976 and released by WHSmith on VHS in 1990.

This is a very good production (considering its age) of a classic story, and was a favourite of mine when I was young. However the opening sequence did scare me just a little! lol.

I can find next to no information anywhere about this production, but the production information I have got is shown below:

Kay: Joshua Le Touzel
Gerda: Linda Slater
Illustrations by: Errol Le Cain
Music: Carl Davis
Animation: Beth McFall
Directed By: Andrew Gosling
Produced By: Ian Keill

Copyright acknowledged to: BBC Enterprises (BBC Worldwide) & WHSmith Ltd

UPDATED JAN 2010. Re-uploaded due to quality issues.

  • 6:15 freaked me out as a kid

  • this is the best movie ever.

  • I remember this so well from my childhood, and being terrified of the snow queen (watching through my fingers). It's also unnerving to see my great aunt Hilda moving and talking (she played the Grandmother) since she's been dead since 1979.

  • The last time I saw the Snow Queens eyes, I was four years old. Wow! Still makes me speechless. Thanks for posting!

  • ** I also didn't realise I wrote on this video before ha!

  • If anyone has seen the Japanese visual novel, Saya no Uta, you could say the story was inspired by this...

  • The Snow Queen is one of the great quest narratives of children's literature as it tells the tale of Kai and Gera through their trial laden journey. This allegory illustrates the dangerously seductive nature of science and reason that can never overcome live preserving power of Christian salvation. Each reading or viewing of this tale will reveal a new layer of meaning to those who truly listen.

  • The best version - Espcially the music

  • Mate I so remember this, the Snow Queen terrified me when I was little! I'm so glad it's on here, I couldn't find the VHS of it!
