Metal is my #1 choice for a roof in Central Texas. In this video I'll tell you all the reasons why I think Metal is a better choice than asphalt shingles or tile. -Matt Risinger

  • Excellent points you make about energy savings and the Green benefits of metal roofing. Your other video on the insulated roof was also good, just cant imagine how much it cost! I am a contractor and have a good idea of the material and labor cost, yet the owner did receive a tax credit ? good video explaining the benefits. btw...my experience with the darker roof colors has seen energy savings results very close to the white and galvalume.

  • @bobmcalister Appreciate the comments. In our hot/humid climate the reflective roof makes a big difference, however that reflective quality of the roof will degrade in time with dirt/pollen/fading etc. The biggest long term benefit is to run your metal roof up on 3/4" lath so the back side of the metal roof will act as a radiant barrier. I wonder if that's what your clients have been experiencing? Yes my insulated roofs are more expensive but this is a 50+ year roof and it's worth it! Matt

  • Very nice. You said something that most folks don't realize. The lighter or more reflective the roof is the better, especially in hotter climates. I see people installing dark green all the time here in Florida and I'm guessing they don't realize how inefficient it is. With electricity prices on the rise, a lighter color will save a lot of money in the long run.

  • @kfox66 Thanks for the kind comments. I very much agree on the light colored roofs. My company does mainly architect driven work so I only have so much influence on the roof color and I always try hard to get my clients & architects to understand why lighter is better in our hot/humid climate. Check out my newer video where I'm showing off an "Energy Star White" roof. That's even more reflective than Galvalume! Thanks again, Matt Risinger

  • Great video. I think almost everyone should go with metal roof. I noticed you mentioned that the cost is double an asphalt, but that's one thing I don't understand. Is your labor cost higher for a metal roof? It seems to me to go up faster. Material costs are higher, but not double. What gives?

  • @jdat747 This is a rough cost difference in Austin TX. I'm not sure what the breakdown between materials & labor would be but I would guess it is partly materials and partly labor. Matt

  • Our metal roof was installed over insulation which helps with energy consumption and quiets the metal. Almost no noise. Our roof costs about $1000 more than a conventional roof. We also get a 15% discount from our insurance Co. , they consider it a permanent roof.

  • Doesn't metal roofing increase the risk of lightening strikes to a home?

  • @1971SuperLead Hope Matt doesnt mind me commenting, no...that is a myth. The home and system are grounded just as before the metal roof was installed.

  • @FriendlyGeekClassics Excellent question. The same durability advantages apply to metal in your climate, but you would want to verify color & install details for your climate zone. A Wisconsin install is very different requirements than a Texas install. No ice here! Matt Risinger

  • what kind of metal roof do you suggest for wisconsin?
