I don't know if this is a common thing with cats, but this is the first time that I've ever encountered it. Our new cat, Philo, occasionally makes this odd "clicking" sound when he spies something that he's itching to attack.

I first saw him make this noise when him and his sister were stalking a fly that had gotten into our house. Here, he's watching a hummingbird that is drinking out of a feeder that we have hanging on our porch.

The sound reminds me of the noise that the titular alien would make in the movie "Predator."

11/9/09 update: Sadly, my wife and I were forced to put Philo to sleep this morning. We learned a week ago that he had a relatively rare cat disease called feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) which is both incurable and fatal. He was just over six months old.

Philo was a wonderful, playful, energetic kitten, and even though he was not with us long, my wife and I loved him as though we had known him for years.

He is greatly missed, and we will always remember him.

  • Is this disease rare or common

  • Sir,your cat is a rattlesnake.

  • What the cat here is doing, is called "flehming". Other animals can do that too. It's pretty common. They use to do this, when they are hunting or sometimes when they are playing too.

  • uhh predator makes noise when hunting or when he has spotted pray, if ur cat can roar i would stab that thing as soon as possible (lol)

  • dont worry, it was all a cover up. he's really a predator pretending to be a house cat. He will be back. man, i wish i had a pet predator

  • Sorry about your kitty! Mine ran away when he was three, we think he fell victim to a predator (around the same time yours passed). I still miss my baby!!
