This is another lucky game of mine, this time against Bhabatosh Chowdhury(2043). It's a Scotch Game where I chose a weird, inaccurate, but aggressive plan. My opponent blundered, allowing checkmate in a complicated position before his middlegame plans were realized.

What is interesting is that this was my first rated chess game in 4 years. I entered this tournament to test my abilities, to see if I could still play competitive chess. Carrying a thick layer of rust, I could not have had a better result to boost my confidence. (I went on to beat a 1900, lose to a 2300, and draw an 1800)

I then entered other tournaments, got into making chess videos after watching some of mjshark's videos, and the rest, as they say, is history.

  • what was the time limit in this game? It seems like there were a mistakes made on both sides.

  • I think it was G60... but my opponent was 30 minutes late. And I agree, as I pointed out, this was a very messy little game.

  • @4:41

After Nd5 why not Qe5 instead of pawn takes knight? This threatens mate on h2 as well as the hanging pawn on b2.

  • Nice observation. You seem to win a pawn!

...Qe5 Bf4 Qxb2 Rfb1 Qa3 Rb3 Qa4 White drives the Black Q to the edge of the board at the cost of a pawn, but I don't see a clear followup at this time. I remember that the computer really liked Nd5 for White, so there is probably a tactical resource somewhere in this position.

  • Excellent vid, game, and commentary!

  • that last move was really great, i could not find it. when you made bishop to b6 i thought it was useless because that pawn it attacked was defended like 3 times, but in fact that was one of the most crucial pieces because of the pin it set up... great game!

  • One guy with the last name of Chowdhurry disliked this

  • ended up wining with a fishing pole tactic grate games.

  • you are a wondrful teacher, no doubt!!

  • Don't be sorry for anything, after researching matches between humans and computers it would appear that I am indeed wrong. Although no GM has actually won a match, they have managed to win a couple of games along the way, so their is still a little hope lol.

  • I am sorry to say this, but you are wrong. No GM has won a serious game against a computer since 2003.

  • Idk why you say Ng4 h3 h5! is insane, because I think it's the right move to play. Even better than the blockade.

  • Nice =) Lol the phone ringed

  • Hi Matt,

Thanks for that analysis. I put this through Rybka and it likes Qe6? after Bf4...not sure why. It looks like a pretty passive continuation to me and taking the b-pawn seems perfectly fine. Maybe I'm missing something.

Anyway, after Rfb1, I think Qd4 is also playable. Also maybe Rab1 is better because the a-rook is hanging if the b-rook has to move off the first rank. Also if Rab1, then Qxa2 is not possible because Ra1 and the bishop on a5 is dead meat.
