Deeply disappointing was how a human rights group yesterday described the vote in the United Nations Human Rights Council hailing the victory of the Sri Lankan Government. This is a breathtaking understatement. It was an utter disgrace. The 47-member body, set up in 2006 to replace the previous corrupt and ineffectual UN Commission on Human Rights, has abjectly failed one of its first and most important tests.

It was asked by its European members to investigate widespread reports of atrocities and war crimes committed by both government troops and the Tamil Tigers in the final weeks of the conflict. The council chose instead to debate a one-sided, mendacious and self-serving motion put forward by the Sri Lankans. This welcomed the liberation of tens of thousands of the island's citizens, condemned the defeated Tigers, made no mention of the shelling of civilians and kept silent on the desperate need to allow the Red Cross and other humanitarian groups into the camps where some 270,000 Tamil civilians have been interned.

Support for this deeply flawed resolution came from the usual suspects - China, Russia, India, Pakistan and a clutch of Asian and Islamic nations determined to prevent the council ever investigating human rights violations in their own or any country.

To her credit, Navi Pillay, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, insisted that there needed still to be an inquiry into very serious abuses. Those abuses, it now emerges, are far, far worse than the outside world imagined. The UN estimated that 7,000 people were killed in the first four months of this year; the figure now appears to be at least 20,000. Thousands of these victims died as a result of the shelling by the Sri Lankan Army of the strip of coastline where the final remnants of Tiger resistance were trapped, along with at least 100,000 civilians.

  • the only solution for the safety of Tamils is is at least recognizing why they demand their own homeland! Rakapaksa will never come up with a political solution because his power is build on buddhist extremists like the JHU, in the east he is depending on LTTE warcriminals and terrorists like Karuna and Pillayan as in the north he uses EPDP paramilitary scum to control and terrorising Tamils!

    FREE CIVILIANS FROM STATE TERRORUSM!

    BOYCOTT SRI LANKA!!!

  • President Obama shamelessly visited the Jewish holocaust camp. Not a single journalist mentioned srilanka not even Obama mentioned Srilanka. Srilanka has seized a ship carrying aid to tamils. Now anyone trying to help tamils are labelled as 'tamil tiger terrorists' and are arrested by the Rajapakse govt. Isnt it evident to the world he is the terrorist? I do not buy any products from china or India or Pakistan. People only care about africans. jews and palestinians.

  • I can understand the reason why you're angry, the I.C. haven't done anything for the rights and safety of tamils during the 61 year old tamil struggle.

But there are also more and more people like me who do care for your people as we also care for the people elsewhere!

you are right that sri lanka doesn't get enough attention in the media but there have to stand up tamil leaders now who can voice your demands peacefully bur strong to the world community.

    I will always support that!

    peace, D.

  • I protest this genocide and atrocities against humanity. Whoever is covering up has complicit knowledge of these crimes, including the United Nations.

  • thanks protester, I will make a videoresponse to your tag vid!

  • what can be said ,its a crime against humanity, how can man move forward when war seems to be the answer to so meny problems ,how can any body say that the death of so meny innocent lives is a victory , shame on all concerned

icant sighn off with usual sighn

    as i am so angry,

    trevor sizzle

  • Thanks Trevor, I don't have the illusion that I can change something with my videos but I know Sri lankans watches them and it's good that they know that the rest of the world is also noticing the ongoing genocide of tamil people even after the war!

India, Pakistan and China are backing up the s.l.government as they all have their own interests in sri lanka. China for example is building a port there for their navy.

The U.N. knew about the 20.000 civilians being killed from the start!

  • India, china and pakistan should be ashamed of themselves that they support warcrimes and genocide by blocking independent U.N. inquiries into the killings of 25.000 wounded and severely injured people who were physically not able to flee when the army attacked!

I know that most sinhalese are true buddhists and I know that your leadership is riding the high tides of war but that all will change when the truth comes out and rajapaksa have to show his solutions!

true peace? only time will tell!

  • UN-based estimates put Sri Lankan civilian death toll at 20,000

    Jun 01 10:28 GMT

The British Times newspaper and Frances Le Monde have both published articles pointing to a far higher civilian death toll in the final months of the civil war in Sri Lanka than previously reported. The reports come in the wake of a resolution sponsored by Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) last Wednesday blocking an investigation into war crimes committed during the fighting
