Shiv Kumar Sharma, widely considered the greatest santoor player ever, mixes Indian classical and North Indian folk traditions with Western instrumentation and arranging into a wonderfully contemplative synthesis that evokes the mountains and rivers of his home, Kashmir as the percussive peaks flow smoothly into the swaying tremolos.
The beauty of the santoor, North India's interpretation of the hammered dulcimer, is in full display on "Ballad." The acoustic guitar, bass, and tabla are no slouches, though! From the 1994 album, Music of the Mountains.
