Backstrap looms have been used in Sikkim and Bhutan for at least 800 years and they are often still seen outside houses in the villages. As you can see the backstrap loom is deceptively simple and basically consists of sticks, rope and a strap that is worn around the weaver's waist (hence the name). Because the technology is simple, poverty is not a barrier to owning and using one. And because they are so mobile they can be taken out into the sun (a necessity in chilly Sikkim), or to the market, or to a friend's house. In the Sikkim Department of Handloom and Handicraft institute backstrap looms are used to make great traditional design with both wool and cotton.
