I think your making it harder than you need to, Post your leg hand hard in to your left leg and that book will come apart quickly. With your right hand pull UP and OUT at the same time. I know it feels a little different at first, but once you get the groove sharp you can so all kinds of stuff like notching, multiple tears, corners and stuff like that.
