Yes, indeed! A real contralto. The honeyed texture and flow of that voice is really quite remarkable. Lovely!

Okay, here goes: Chi t'ha fatto quelle calzette Che ti stan si ben, Girometta Che ti stan si ben. Me l'ha fatto lo mio Amore Che mi vol gran ben, Girometta Che mi vol gran ben. (unknown Italian poet -16th century) Who has made these tiny slippers That become you so, Girometta That become you so? They were made by my lover Who adores me so, Girometta Who adores me so. (translation by cypher133, 2010) Simple, lovely song. Sophie Braslau lives forever! a

Douglasio,
Sophie is SENSATIONAL and a Ravishing Beauty and her voice is Glorious. Merci.
Warm voice and charming singing, though not particularly striking. All I know about Braslau is that she sang at the Met and then became primarily a concert singer. She had been inspired by Alma Gluck and likewise sang Yiddish songs. According to her dates, she died rather young. On the Internet (that most reliable source!), it says she had been ill for two years and bedridden for six months. One reference I found states she was born in 1902, but this appears unlikely. Thanks for sharing, Doug!

Hi Nate: Thank YOU! According to the NYT obituary, Braslau was bedridden for a long time, and died, due to lung cancer. The pallbearers read like a Who's Who of the classical music scene of that time. Doug --

A true contralto with the old contralto sound. A good trill and a wonderfully light touch. A good concert singer!
