Now it's late March, and the Urban Farmers of Sustainable NE Seattle continue their project to convert Joann's front lawn into a food garden. http://sustainableneseattle.ning.com/
I appreciate your sharing this with all of us. I have watched many (many!) a permaculture/organic gardening video. In earnestness, I think that it would have been far easier to just "build up" over time. No digging, no cutting. Perhaps planting in straw/compost the first year. The entire site does not need to be planted immediately/at the same time. And with ongoing layering, beds can be raised, carbon not released, etc. But yes, (supposed) to be an ongoing experiment:)
@greendang Lawn Gone 3 is the last installment that shows the results form the first season. Right now I am in spring planting mode, the soil is good, stuff is growing well again. I am SO GLAD i did this project from many prospectives; have a great conversation spot, don't have to drive to eat, veggies are fresh, veggies are organic and don't cost as much to be so, I've learned a lot and can now educate others. Its been a win, win, win, win, win, win, etc.
I have a medium size lawn in my back yard that I'd like to turn into something like yours...you're very inspiring! Do you have more videos of what it has become? Would like to see what you have right now. Are you happy you did it?
I don't know what the soil pH was but what I planted grew so it must have been right for those veggies. I continue to add mulch of leaves, clippings and worm bin castings so the soil is changing and evolving all the time.
great food garden, hoping to start mine too.
