North Carolina's Lumbee Indian Tribe has been seeking federal recognition -- and the tens of millions of dollars that could come with it - for decades. But in 2010, the climate for achieving recognition has never been better.

  • Though I'm not a Lum, I support the push for federal recognition.

  • It's so silly, all these native american tribes squabbling over another tribe being allowed federal recognition, just because they're scared they'll get less funding. that's honestly disgusting....to me, (and I say this as a white person) it's just native americans being made over into the white man's image. acting just like the white man would. but then again, who the hell am I to talk? I dunno.

  • ya know, I'm basically a white person, so maybe I got no room to talk. But I say, screw federal recognition- because federal recognition essentially destroys or permanently alters tribes...you enter into that shit with the evil US government and you're never the same after that.

  • geez Cherokees are so rotten. I say this in some humor, because I have some distant Cherokee ancestors, and I am married to an enrolled Cherokee tribal member. But it's still funny and true, because the Cherokees have really done nothing but cause people trouble. Even my husband agrees to this.

  • good luck 2 them

  • FEDERAL RECOGNITION HAS PROS AND CONS BUT THEY SHOULD TAKE THAT INTO ACOUNT

  • I live here as well. Native Americans everywhere. Recognize them!!

  • @v19d Also the other reason is that most people of that tribe would sell its soul

  • I heard there is opposition by members of that tribe. Because the Government would end up discouraging right to own its own land.

  • no language, no culture for sovereignty to protect
