I am a Hindenburg aficionado. While this movie is loaded with outright falsehoods, I have always loved the film because it deals with a subject matter in which I've always had great interest. And, Shire's theme has always been one of my favorite things about the film. I agree that Robert Wise made the right call in not using this version. The more orchestrated version creates a weight that is more commensurate with the ship itself. The piece is a brilliant harmonic and melodic concept.

I was hoping this would be the main title as used in the film. Instead it's some lady howling???

The original sound as conceived by David Shire was this format (a vocalise, or singing without words). In the liner notes to this CD, David Shire At The Movies, Shire explains that this was his original concept for the main title. He just didn't get to use it.
This is not howling but sung by a world-class Classical singer, Carol Neblett :)

I'm sure the singer is very talented and I'm not trying to be rude to you. However, director Robert Wise was very......wise not to let Shire use this version in the film.
