Making and using a shave horse.

Timber is off cuts of pressure treated timber that cost less than $10.00 at the local builders merchants, rounds of timber are hazel and come from the woods.

Dims

Bench is approx 5ft long, 2 inc hes thick and 9 inches wide
legs are 3 inches in diameter and 18" long
work surface is 3ft long and 8 inches wide by 1 inch thick
treadle is 32 inches long, pivots are made from 3/4" seasoned hazel, cross, clamp, push bards are made from hazel and ash and are 9 1/2 inches wide to give the treadle clearance on the bench.

Whole assy is very stable and very comfortable to use

  • I figure you could use some pine pitch to glue those rollers in place while at the same time coat the rollers and plate in a pine pitch and sand mixture to get it a lot more grippy so that the piece your working on stops moving around so much.

What I dont understand though is why you'd want only one legg on one side, seems like having two legs there as well wouldn't pose any problems to the functioning of the mechanism while it'd increase stability quite a bit.

  • @88Kamikaze69 the shave horse is now a lot more grippy than is was in that video as i moved the fulcrum point towards me and lowered the grip bar by a few inches, the top bar on the horse in the video, is now the loc of the grip, i shave shingles now and nothing moves unless i want it to, no need for sand etc as this would mark the piece you are working, the horse is three legged as on uneven ground three legs are more stable than four and easier to get stable, think of a milking stool - 3 legs

  • I have one that's110 years old that my great grandfather made. They made shingles with it. I use it for all of my tenons for furniture.

  • great video!

how much do you weigh if you don't mind me asking? i'm skeptical if this rig can hold my weight.
