Many thanks to people that show support and have found this video helpful!
Step by step how to play movies off a external hard drive or a pen drive.

all you need is

1x PS3 console
1x External usb storage device with pre loaded movies in avi format.

hover over the usb device icon and press triangle and then you will have the option to "Display all" then you will have access to all your files.

same applies to music

  • I do this but all it says is unsupported file type, and it is an avi file! whats goin on?

  • To play WMV format files, you must go to (Settings) - (System Settings) and set [Enable WMA Playback].
