Andreas, as always, is as close to perfection as a singer can get, in my opinion. Stephanie Blythe is an absolutely wonderful singer, no argument there. But the Met production of Orfeo ed Euridice was disappointing to me. In particular, the tempo of this aria was ridiculously fast. Not even Andreas is singing it as fast as Stephanie was asked to sing it. And for a singer with as big a voice as Stephanie has, singing the penultimate aria of the opera that quickly had to be frustrating for her.
Now this is how the aria should be performed.. A good countertenor, male sopranist should be the only ones to perform the role of Orfeo, instead of contraltos. What a beautiful voice Mr. Scholl has, like a boy soprano. :D
I have heard his recordings. The sound quality is about what could be expected from 1903-1904. These recordings are not representative of what castrati were capable of because Alessandro was a church singer, whose requirements are quite different from opera and theater. Also Alessandro's style is from the late 19th century.
We have a production of Orfeo ed Euridice in Bratislava's National Theatre (directed by Polish director Mariusz Treliński) and the role is transposed down an octave and is sung by a baritone singer...
Yeah the role is transposed originally 2 octaves down from the Ricordi version for alto ,that is based in the Berlioz version for contralto,but original versions(Gluck versions) are for alto castrato(but the original opera was for a soprano castrato) and the french one for haute-contre. So there is no even a baritone version...and again a medium low register you can change the key and suits totally a contralto
Not always,Farinelli was a soprano,but Senesino or Carestine were altos so not all the castrati were soprani.And real countertenors don't use falsetto they use head voice(pretty much like any female voice) cause in real countertenors the vocal chords are not calcified,the countertenors are not countertenors are falsettistiwho sing in falsetto with very small voices,no power,no harmonics and uncapable to sing an entire opera or fill an opera house
