You could say Hmong have been in the U.S. since 1975. Christma is a holiday honoring the birth of Christ/Jesus or whatever Christian believe in. Anyway, the Hmong New Year is a totally different concept. In comparison it is more like Chinese new year. The Hmong believe that since they spent all year working, they set a week per year of rest and entertainment, visiting friends/relatives, honoring ancestors, etc. That's why Hmong values New Year since in Laos it is the only time Hmong can rest.
