As many across this nation debate the pros and cons of Arizona's new immigration law, I believe we need to unite and send a clear message that we will no longer tolerate the federal government's failure to protect our borders.

In the absence of federal legislation addressing the influx of illegal immigrants in our country, states, including Indiana, are being forced to take matters into their own hands. Many are searching for ways to combat the growing financial and social problems associated with illegal immigration. Costs borne by taxpayers include healthcare, education and incarceration just to name a few.

Here recently in Hamilton County, state and local officials arrested two illegal immigrants following a three-month narcotics investigation on a southwest Carmel residence a case law enforcement officials say may have cost taxpayers between $5,000 and $8,000. The two illegal immigrants were among five people arrested for trying to sell cocaine and marijuana.

These arrests highlight the time and money illegal immigration costs taxpayers. It's a shame especially when resources are scarce that hard-working Hoosiers are footing the bill for people who have no respect for the rule of law.

Incidents like these offer further evidence that our federal government can no longer afford to ignore the problems associated with illegal immigration. It's not just an issue of the border states. It's an issue spreading across the country.

While states largely rely on the federal government to enact immigration policy, they do retain some authority to act on their own especially when the federal government continually fails to take action. In its 1976 De Canas v. Bica ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the states' authority to enact certain immigration-related laws, so long as they are consistent with existing federal law.

America was founded on fundamentals of freedom and has always welcomed immigrants here if they abide by the laws of our land. But the federal government has created a dangerous and unacceptable situation where immigration is concerned, one that will only get worse if this problem continues to be ignored. A solution is needed one that differs from the failed amnesty efforts included in the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.

I remain committed to addressing this issue in our state and will again reintroduce legislation cracking down on illegal immigration in Indiana, if our federal government continues to ignore its responsibility.

We must unite and do more to enforce the rule of law.

  • @sleepytrucker252 Okay, one more thing.. you spelled Jesus wrong. (: Have a nice day trucker 252, remember to get some sleep.

  • @itshouldberaining jezuz, you can always tell the silver spoonies by their comments. Sir, there are "no jobs Americans will not take" whoever pounded that in your head, had special interest in doing so, mainly higher profitability and lower labor rates. That is such a BS, sorry, false, way out of wack statement. We have families here in the US who would gladley spread pigshit on ceilings 23 hours a day in 110 degree temps for 7 bucks and hour, so take your "points on both sides" and shove it

  • immigration, yet 90% deportation. What are you trying to say? We need that 10% of immigrants to work at the low paying jobs because if they were all deported, no American would take those jobs. So if you told people, hey you all can go back to your country, but oh wait, we're going to need some of you because we do not want to work at those laborious jobs. There are justificable points to both sides.

  • @sleepytrucker252 I can tell you are very educated about this. The 'LMFAO' was a delicate touch. Murderer, crime and rape are commited by people of different ethnicities, not just the Hispanic population. I understand that many people who immigrate to the United States of America 'live off of the government' with bauchers, but I do not believe that the methods that are being used to fix this problem are reasonable, I find them almost discriminative. You said above that there should be no

  • "Law inforcement agencies should just stick to their duties" LMFAO this guy is ignoring everything, all the issues, all the violent crime, murderers on Indiana's most wanted, hospital bills unpaid, costing tax payers more with each visit. At this point, NO Immigration at all, followed by 90% deportation would be the perfect fix. "I hope the federal government legalizes all the people currently inside the united states" WTF? does he think we like exponential unemployment rates?

  • They keep speaking of AZ's cost to inforce? what about the millions they are saving in uncompinsated medical? uninsuared accidents? murder? rape? unemployment reductions, newly available jobs with the removal of mexicans who are illegal. I'll bet this guy wanst the feds to "keep inforcing the law" they do NOTHING!!! Thank god! here it comes! Join your local tea party! take hosa out! lets get bakc the jobs special interest politiitions claim are "not wanted by Americans" BS!!!

  • Jezuz, what about the uncompinsated medical cost, 871 million! paid by US! and why all these jobs filled with ALiens! would removing them not increase jobs for Indiana's citizens? EVERY MOST WANTED LIST IN EVERY STATE OF THE UNION is FULL OF ILLEGAL ALIENS! get them out, we the people are tired! who cares what the latino has to say, we live it, we see it we suffer through it, its time for a change!!

  • hmm... interesting. I think it was very clear that illegal aliens in our country is a BAD thing.

  • Surreal

  • Mike you knocked him out of the ring. Enforce our existing laws. We were promised in 1986 that our immigration laws would be enforced, there wouldn't be another amnesty and our border would be secured. We were lied to. Now it is time the federal government kept the promise made in 1986. We are tired of waiting, enforce the laws already on the books. Fight back America, no amnesty and get MECha out of our schools.
