Brandon (Michael Fassbender) is a New Yorker who shuns intimacy with women but feeds his desires with a compulsive addiction to sex. Having the inability to form emotional attachment or any kind of relationship is not 'normal'. Clearly, if you have seen the film, something happened in his and his sister's past that deeply affected them to be what they are: sex addicts. You can see the self-loathing and inescapable solidarity and shame is carries with him everywhere he goes. It's not that he simply WANTS free, careless sex...He NEEDS it, to escape himself and whatever he is running from. He's not normal. He's trapped.

I guess nobody really understood the fact that, the main character is a sexual addict because of the guilt and SHAME he has for the sexual atraction (and possible experience) he has with his sister when they were young...thus the agression and the tension when she is naked next to him. I know it´s not so clear for all of you easy plot seekers...but it really is an unspoken and sensitive theme in the film. The theme is so SHAMEfull for the character that he can´t really talk about it. Realism!

I HATE MOVIES LIKE THIS I think that every sundance film is the same they drop the viewer in a scenario with a character with no beginning and no end like we get he is a sex addict but they never really tell us why then they end it in away that we don't know if the characters change or stay the same I don't know what film makers are thinkin it does not make a movie deeper by only telling half of a story a movie is deep when it is complete and keeps you guessing

I'm ordinarily skeptical of films like this because they can too easily be turned into puritan anti-sexuality pieces. It was refreshing to see a film that tackled the subject of sexual addiction without demonizing sex.

I figured it was more like some parental abuse. What she fully said was, "We're not bad people. We just came from a bad place."

Then again, I'm just theorizing.

Think back to the scene where he goes into his apartment thinking there is a robbery but finds his sister naked in the bathroom. rather than talking to her with the door closed, he continues to talk to her while she is full naked as if there is nothing wrong with that giving us the hint he has seen her fully naked before. What brother and sister have a casual conversation while one is naked? it applies that they had some sexual past. But steve didn't want to delve to deep into it.

not too bad, but i prefer my sex addicts to be happier and with more personality, this guy just reminded me of my life only without the constant sex and money, having his life would be an improvement

it may be so, however, i disagree with you concerning his character. you said this in an other comment (didn't think about his emotions, feelings etc). i think has no real emotions, lost the capability to feel, therefore he needed stronger and stronger stimuli to feel anything (sexually or otherwise). he kinda forgot that he was burnt out and could do whatever he wanted till his sister showed up, who urged and reminded him to get back to the normal path. nevertheless, they're both failures.

I don't think he had sex with his sister..I just think they had a really bad past in were sex abuse was involved for both of them.. he might be running realizing how fucked up they both are. he's a sick person he's an addict and her sister depressed and weak . trying to think for a way to make things better and to change

I agree that his sister isn't a sex addict, but no she didn't made him sexually frustrated she just broke that little fantasy of ''perfectworld'' were he just fucked and didn't think about his emotions, feelings or problems... her sister made him think about their real emotional problems that's why he seem so frustrated.
