Love The Smiths and the Bunnymen, but this, as a single, is the best song of the 1980s.

I've recently discovered this song and think it's amazing. His voice is wonderful- operatic , theatrical , eerie and yearning in this song. I wiki'd him and was sad to read he had died a couple of years ago. I'd have liked to have heard him sing live

This song in particular, Operatic, Theatrical, but definately original and unlikley copied from other sources. I am interested if anyone knew who they were influences though. His voice reminds me of The lead singer of The SParks.

An exceptional song, incredible vocal.

This, to me, is the greatest opening instrumental to any song, ever!

What year was this released?

@XMARINEmax February 1982. The clip is from later the same year - Alan Rankine may have actually left the group by this stage.

I'm pretty certain that Michael Dempsey also played on The first picture of you by The Lotus Eaters as well. It definitely sounds like him and in fact the whole song sounds a lot like The Associates. By the way, where was the one and only Mr Rankine for these Gotterdammerung 2000 appearances?

@MisAnnThorpe Alan Rankine left the group August/September 1982, but the group may have still had promo duties to fulfil after he left.
