How have we allowed the word "atheism" to accumulate such negative baggage?

  • Religion is all about social control and conformism. By declaring yourself an atheist, you implicitly declare yourself a rebel and an enemy of the status quo. Also you remind the theists of the fact that they're a bunch of spineless, intellectually lazy fools who believe in fairytales. Deep down most of them know it's all BS, which is why they fear death and cry at funerals. The emperor is buck naked and they know it, but it's easier to kill the messenger than to think & live for oneself.

  • The only thing wrong with Atheism is that it has not yet been universally adopted.

  • If you let people who arent' atheists own the word then it's going to pick up some negative connotations.

  • @Parapon3ra this is so goin up as my new facebook status XP

  • @jonesgerard Religion is too negative a force to be treated with kid gloves. 'Polite', 'discreet' atheism will simply get ignored; it's (relatively) militant Dawkins style atheism that gets discussions going, and confronts people with their silly dogmas & taboos. Yes, religion *is* dangerous BS, and people should be made aware of that, by whatever means necessary, for their own benefit and for the benefit of society/civilization as a whole.

  • @Parapon3ra Its this very type of venomous posting that paints atheism with the rabid brush.

What goes through their mind comes out their mouth.

Thats enough to keep most people away from atheism whether they follow a religion or not.

  • I agree, my friends at school ask if I don't believe in god what do I believe in? That is just a stupid question.

  • i don't have a problem calling myself atheist (anymore) because i find the stigma people like to attach to it is no different than the stigma of being anything people collectively find undesirable. i would no more accept being looked down on for atheism than for being an undesirable gender, or race, or weight, or height, or income level. no matter what label you use, there will be someone who finds it undesirable. even 'non-theist' won't keep that from happening
