Iraq Suicide Bombers Kill Dozens

WONG:
In Iraq suicide bombers attacks appearing to target Shi'ite pilgrims, descending on Baghdad for a major religious event, and a separate blast in the northern city of Kirkuk during a protest over provincial election laws, killed at least 50 people.
STORY:
Suicide bombers set off three blasts in Baghdad. At least 28 people have been killed and more than 90 wounded. The attacks happened in rapid succession in a central district through which thousands of Shi'ite pilgrims are passing en route to the Kadhamiya Shrine.

The bombers were women - better able to evade the security measures more strictly enforced on men.

Despite the bloodshed the pilgrims say they won't be deterred.

[Thaer Abid Nour, Shi'ite Pilgrim]:
"We've come from the al-Aziziya area of al-Hafriya town. We intend to visit the shrine of Moussa al-Kadhim, God willing, and the blasts that happened today will not defeat us. They will strengthen our resolve to make this visit and defeat terrorism."

Gunfire erupted in the northern oil city of Kirkuk after a separate bombing that killed at least 22 more people. Again the number of wounded ran into the dozens. The blast happened during as thousands demonstrated against new laws on provincial elections. A Turkmen political office was also wrecked by armed demonstrators in the wake of the blast.

Police say the demonstrators had sought refuge inside the building but came under fire from guards who feared they were under attack.

A curfew has been imposed on the city until Tuesday.

Violence is at its lowest level in four years in Iraq, but the U.S. military says it expects high-profile attacks from insurgents looking to grab media attention and show they are still a potent force.
