In many ways the current healthcare system is very effective at rewarding certain behaviors--those behaviors involve manipulating the system to extract maximum revenue from the government, insurance companies and patients. Let's have a system that rewards behaviors that make people healthier!
The fundamentals of our health care system are flawed and must be reviewed in order to effect changes that reduce cost, improve coverage, promote health and obtain care with value. For instance, according to the NEJM, December 27, 2007, more than 300 men 65 years of age or older would need to undergo surgery in order to prevent one death from prostate cancer in 10 years. Individual decisions, as here by a urologist or cancer doctor, are obsolete. Each patient must be treated collectively.
