Issued in Canada June 1982 on Quality 2415.

Scott "Hollywood" Harris and "Captain" Pete Daly were disc jockeys at CKOC in Hamilton, Ontario. Harris worked the 6-9PM show from 1977 to 1987. Information on Pete Daly is a lot harder to find. He worked at 'OC for several years, the period of which is undocumented on the web, although it would be 1979 or slightly earlier through the mid-'80s. I seem to recall him in the late night slot.

The two made their first record together as The Scottie-Pete Gang in 1980, satirizing "Rapper's Delight" as "Rapper's De-Feet." This was very early in the history of rap music; it was not intended to be rap, but humor. Their next single was released in June 1982, with playing assistance from Hamilton musicians Tom Wilson & The Florida Razors (Tom would later form Junkhouse and then Blackie & The Rodeo Kings), The Shakers' Dave Desroches (who would go on to become a member of Teenage Head and then form The Dave Rave Conspiracy), and a now-untraceable group called Visions.

"Beach Bum" must have been a strictly local record to the Hamilton market. It did not chart in RPM or elsewhere, but on the CKOC Top 100 Hits of 1982 chart, it resides at #54.

Scott Harris has kindly provided the musician credits for this record: Pete Daly (talking vocals), Scott Harris (singing), Jason Avery (Florida Razors - guitar), Dave (Rave) Desroches (The Shakers - guitar), Carl Keesee (Florida Razors - bass & saxophone), Greg "Boom Boom" Cannon (Florida Razors - drums), a group called Visions sing backup vocals, and Tom Wilson (Florida Razors) is in there singing "wop bop-a-loo-bops" but you have to listen carefully to hear him.

Scott Harris left radio to pursue a career as a standup comedian. As of the fall of 2008, he is working with Simon B. Cotter in "Baby Boomers: The Show," for which a video presentation may be seen here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZ1HPEDYJZQ&fmt=18 .

What Pete Daly is doing now is a bit of a mystery. He isn't on any of the radio websites, no Google, no airchecks, no nothing. I did find one photo of him, taken with other CKOC alumni at their 85th anniversary celebration. If you are out there, Pete, and you see this, please leave a comment!

Special thanks to Scott Harris for authorizing his song's appearance on YouTube, and for supplying additional information on it.

  • Remember them both quite well. I still have a few old late night cassette clips from that station from about 1984-86, I should check them if I can find them. Those few years I caught the AM radio bug again.

There used to be a southern Ontario radio board online which may still exist, and where answers may possibly be found about Pete Daly, but there were some real hotheads screaming at each other in there last time I checked.

  • Found one of my cassette CKOC airchecks, close to Easter 1986. She Sells Sanctuary, Silent Running, You Spin Me Round, If I Was, Tarzan Boy etc. DJ was Dale Parker, good solid DJ voice.

  • I haven't heard either of these songs in over thirty years and Wow, the memories came flooding back. My name is Scott Harris and I am one of the guys that recorded these songs thousands of years ago before the earth cooled (at least it seems that long ago, so thank you mojofilter02 for putting them up here on Youtube so my ancestors can hear what really bad music sounded like all those years ago.

ps. for the past twenty seven years I have been a stand up comic, you can google me if you like.

  • Hey Mojo, you have lots of the nice osbscure one off Canadian stuff up,

are you in canada? I have boxes of this stuff if you are looking for something particular especially 45's.

  • great post - one of the producers of this track is my cousin.

    Where's Rapper's Dee-feet?

  • mojo, Thanks for posting this! I've been looking forever for this, finally just in time for my Hawaii trip.

Another early 80s song I'm looking for is "happy birthday kid" by Geoff Hughes.

  • I keep expecting to hear "Gimme dat ding" start up...

  • Never heard this one before, down here in Philly. Played it twice and now, darn it, it's stuck in my head. And I'm sure it'll be back next summer when I hit the Jersey shore!

  • Well that was a bit of a shock! I don't know where Pete is either but I am still doing stand up comedy and my new theatre show "Baby boomers the show" has a four minute clip here on youtube if you want to check it out. I don't know who you are but your facts are pretty much dead on.

    Scott Harris
