While Germany is phasing out its nuclear power stations, many eastern European countries are planning to build new ones.Last month's gas dispute between Russia and Ukraine severely disrupted supplies to the region. Now states, such as Lithuania,Latvia,Estonia,Poland and Albania, want to become more energy independent, with the help of nuclear power. Romania, alone,is planning to build four new reactors. Bulgaria's Belene nuclear power plant is already well beyond the planning stage. Bulgaria's national electric company NEK and Russia's Atomstroyexport are working together to build the plant. German companies Siemens and RWE are also participating in the 5.5 billion euro project. Karl Harenbrock went to take a look.

  • Google " molecular nuclear fusion" to find out how to turn regular water into power. With no plutonium

  • those are the kind of activists I would go campagining AGAINST! Get your freking PRIOERTIES straight! there are I am sure many worser environmental problems in Bulgaria than this! With Russia, Bulgaria and Germany involved in this power-plant the chances of it acutally being modern and safe are almost 100%; You really think the gov of Bg, Russia and two huge corporations based in Gemrany, the land of precision engennering, would risk their money on a bad plant? hell no; go Berlin plant!

  • Green activists are INSANE. They have no arguments, just pure emotions!!!!

  • Atomic Energy is the way to go the future is fusion power.

  • @kensai7gr

    absolutely

  • Thank god, at least Germany doesn't get the RADIOACTIVE WASTE pumped into the ground.

  • In order to provide electricity with the reliability of supply, in the quantities demanded, and at a price consistent with even today's expectations, there is no alternative technology to nuclear powered power stations. Whilst this is still essentially steam-age technology, it is improbable that Bulgarians wish to return to the general quality of life, of that era.
