Well, just got my first pair of glasses today, which of course prompts me to play Elton John's first hit, Your Song. Hope you like!

You can see below that the typical Elton John band had probably yet to record with Elton John at the time of Your Song, given the musicians listed on this recording.

YOUR SONG
Available on the album Elton John
Music: Elton John

piano and vocals: Elton John
drums: Barry Morgan
bass guitar: Dave Richmond

Lyrics:

It's a little bit funny this feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide
I don't have much money but boy if I did
I'd buy a big house where we both could live

If I was a sculptor, but then again, no
Or a man who makes potions in a travelling show
I know it's not much but it's the best I can do
My gift is my song and this one's for you

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world

I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
Well a few of the verses well they've got me quite cross
But the sun's been quite kind while I wrote this song
It's for people like you that keep it turned on

So excuse me forgetting but these things I do
You see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen

The very last time I saw my Grandma Elton in Stratford General Hospital, we shared the piano bench as I played this song for her. The painting over my left shoulder was painted by my Grandfather Babensee.
I must have learned this song around 1981, shortly after returning from living 3 years in Edmonton. I had mainly been playing classical pieces via the Royal Conservatory until then. This was played on my trusty 10 year old Yamaha P90 digital piano.
RIP Grandma & Grandpa Elton, Grandpa Babensee and all of my dear relatives passed, those I knew and met, and those I have yet to meet, and God bless all of my friends and family, good health to all!

1/21/2012 - RIP - Rita Rudess, mother to Dream Theater's keyboard wizard, Jordan Rudess.

Below is a quote from an e-mail I just sent my Great Aunt Ernita. It's a bit about my Grandma Elton's piano playing and the fun we had with meals at my Grandma & Grandpa Elton's in Stratford Ontario.

"Grandma had said she took lessons as kids along with Aunt Helen, but I think Grandma went a little further with it! I even convinced Grandma to play a little at the hospital that last time we saw her, and it's amazing how I could here bits of her old song being very lightly played. She had that ability to make the left hand fly left for a bass note, and then quickly fly right and hit the right chord, then fly back for another bass note. I could never quite emulate that style. Ah, Grandma had the most delicious food, yes. I have great memories of meals there. A tradition for lunch when we arrived was 'Bacon Things', as we called them. They were open faced hamburger buns with melted cheese and bacon, and some had cheese bacon onions and a slice of tomato. Grandma was so loving, she always had my favourite cereals too in the morning, Alphabits or Frosted Flakes. As I would be eating the pre-breakfast early on a Sunday morning, I would be half way through the cereal, and Grandma would be pouring more into my bowl! :)
And dinners were something, Grandpa would be cutting the meat at one end of the table, and he would happily have the ham on all plates well before Grandma could keep up with adding vegetables to all of the plates. I heard this was an English way of serving food, instead of the usual passing of the potatoes. Grandpa would be teasing Grandma about how long it's taking at the other end, "jeezz!", and Grandma would get a little upset, and Grandpa would let out a hearty laugh, Grandma would smile while spooning out appropriate portions for everyone, then Grandpa would stand up and tell a joke in varied British accents.... always lots of laughter and fun!"
