The many processes that go into making a various range of garden tools produced at the Clarington Forge factory in Wigan. Founded in 1780 the factory is built on a site previously used by cistercian monks who also made garden equipment.

@georgecmarshall its a shame both our great nations heavy ind is going to the dogs to be replaced by chinese shit, bulldog are the last bastion but bought by all the tradesmen they are great tools and have a cult following

Thank you for posting that. Remarkable craftsmanship. I own a construction company in America. And i avoid buying tools made in China. There are still many tools made in America.And a few made in Germany.But sadly there isnt many still made in the UK. British tools used to have a great reputation for quality. i can only assume that British companies outsourced to China..Its a shame.British workers made high quality tools.Once a company outsources to China,its tools become crap.

I served my time as an apprentice fitter at English Tools from 1968 till 1973, when I left engineering for good. I can't say my memories of the place are particularly happy ones. The working conditions were often dire, ie choking coke fire fumes. I think most fitters wanted to get better jobs. However, I know the company's products were second to none and I enjoyed watching this film.

Bulldog is now the only English factory forging in the traditional manner. The fact that the spades and forks are made from one piece of steel means that there are no weak points such as welds. Making them much much stronger. Bulldog tools are still english made in Wigan. One the same site that has been home to the factory for over 200 years!

Wonderful! I used to work in an agricultural engineers shop, and we sold Bulldog shovels,manure forks, hay forks, garden spades etc.. I remember how well made and nicely finished these tools were. Things of this sort make me proud to be British, but sadly there is less and less to be proud of these days.

I quite agree with your last comment. Britain's traditional industries have slowly eroded away and we're just now left with the basics.
